The life cycle of a plant

The life cycle of a plant

Stage 1: Seed is planted
First, a seed is planted in the ground. It needs Water, Oxygen and Warmth (WOW) if it is to successfully develop into a flowering plant.

Stage 2: Seed begins to expand
When a seed begins to expand, we say, germination has begun. The cotyledons store food for the baby plant inside the seed.

Stage 3: roots and leaves develop
When the seed starts to germinate, the first thing to come out is the main root. The skin starts to split and the tiny shoot straightens, carrying the cotyledon[s] with it. The main root gets bigger. Subsequently, leavers developed

Stage 4: Flowers appear
Then, the mature flower contains the parts of the plant which enable it to reproduce.

Stage 5: pistils of flowers receive pollen
In order for the plant to be able to reproduce the flower needs to be pollinated.
*Methods of Pollination
In this point, mature flowers produce pollen which is dispersed through a variety of means.Bees can help flowers make seeds. Bees usually look for pollen and sweet juice. Every flower has pollen, although some flowers don't have sweet juice. A stigma is the female part of a flower that receives the pollen. In other words, when a bee gets pollen from a flower, the pollen sticks to the bee.

Stage 6: fruit forms
Afterwards, seeds form in the ovary and the ovary swells and ripens. A ripened ovary is known as a Fruit, So the pips inside an apple are actually seeds.

Stage 7: Seeds fall
Later, the fruit of the plant will eventually dry out and burst open, releasing the seeds into the environment, where they are dispersed by the wind, insects, and animals such as birds and bats.

Stage 8: plant dies and decomposes
Finally, the fertilized seeds fall to the ground and the lifecycle starts all over again.

Article title: Coffee and naps not helping your jet lag? Try starving instead.

Brief summary of the article
In according to Dr. Clifford Saper of Harvard Medical School, a period of fasting with no food at all for about 16 hours is enough to keep this new clock. They would be awake and alert and ready to go an hour or two before a meal was due to appear to have maximal chance of getting the food. This is built into the brain. The problem is, nobody knew how it worked. While skipping meals before a long flight or night shift has not been proven to work in humans, it may be worth a try.

Reuters Published: May 23, 2008
CHICAGO: Starving yourself before a long flight may help prevent jet lag, according to U.S. researchers.

Normally, the body's natural circadian clock in the brain dictates when to wake, eat and sleep, all in response to light. But it seems a second clock takes over when food is scarce, and manipulating this clock might help travelers adjust to new time zones, the researchers said Thursday.

"A period of fasting with no food at all for about 16 hours is enough to engage this new clock," said Dr. Clifford Saper of Harvard Medical School, whose study appears in the journal Science.

"Because the body's clock can only shift a small amount each day, it takes the average person about a week to adjust to the new time zone," Saper said in a statement. "And, by then, it's often time to come home."

Saper and colleagues knew that when food was scarce, animals were able to override their normal biological clock to improve their chances of finding food.

Studies have shown that mice fed only during the time when they normally sleep shift their body clocks to this new schedule.

"They would be awake and alert and ready to go an hour or two before a meal was due to appear to have maximal chance of getting the food," Saper said by telephone. "This is built into the brain. The problem is, nobody knew how it worked."

He and his colleagues set out to find this mechanism. They used a group of mice that had been genetically engineered to lack a master gene called BMAL1 that regulates the body's clock. They put this gene into the shell of a hollowed-out virus that acted as a vector to deliver the gene only to brain cells they were interested in studying.

When they put it into a small region of the hypothalamus that serves as the body's primary clock, the mice adjusted to a light-based schedule for waking and sleeping, but not eating.

"If you don't wake them up, they will starve to death," Saper said.

However, when they restored the gene only in a section of the hypothalamus that helps organize waking and feeding schedules, the mice adjusted to the eating schedule, but not daylight.

Saper said that these same clock genes were known to be in all mammals, including humans.

While skipping meals before a long flight or night shift has not been proven to work in humans, it may be worth a try.

"I'm certainly going to do it the next time I go to Japan," he said.

the south of the Han River/ the north of the Han River

the area's south of the Han River/ the area's north of the Han River

After 1960's, it was developed with the new place where the south of the Han River in Seoul, and then the area’s value has risen gradually. The south of the Han River has developed like a modern city. On the other hand the north of the Han River has developed like a traditional culture. I will explain the differences of both areas of the Han River. And I will search both areas similarities that should have developing together in Seoul.

There are many differences between the culture of south and the north of the Han River in Seoul. It seems like to have the difference of the cultures between Seoul and localities. First of all, because of being made new circumstance in south by intentionally; the straight roads, convenience new apartments, good training institutes and various cultural facilities, the south of the Han River is more popular than the north of the Han River. Also as the part of the global business, COEX, international convention center, lots of first-rate hotel, and Teheran Road located in many big scale buildings, are located in the south of the Han River. The south is more international than the north of the Han River.

Another difference is that two areas differ from the educational environment. The south of the Han River has more various institutes than the north of the Han River. As those of the south have the detail programs that are adjusted for student’s level. The south is superior to the north in a teacher’s ability too. In according to recent report, the middle school students’ English score in the south is higher than that in the north. In the south a middle school’s average score is 97. This is higher by 13 to 10 than Seoul average(87), Pusan average(85) ,and Deagu average(84). In the north B middle school’s average score(82) is lower by 15 than in the south's that. The third differences, as a result of in this education environment, two areas have been widening the distinction of the housing price. Even though in the same condition, the south’s house is sold even more expensive than the north’s.

But there are also similarities that should have developing between the south of the Han River and the north of the Han River in Seoul. I think, two areas will try to balance the difference of the culture’s merits. Each of two cultures has some unique. The south has a character of modern city. And the north has a character of the historical and traditional city. Recently, as the city government official’s real estate policy that will develop in the north, the north’s house price is higher than the former’s that. The north’s Yongsan, and Ganghwamun will be changed into the business area like Teheran Road. It is necessary to remodel their unique culture and to adjust to new changed situation. To be attractive Seoul, both areas should be to make up for the weak points in the present condition and to develop for the unique of cultures

There are many differences and a few similarity in the south of Han River and north of Han River. Although two areas have some differences, the gap of the both become narrow more and more. Repeatly, it is getting closer to both areas that had the gap of culture, educational circumstance and real estate. And then both areas will be in harmony with their different culture. It is one of the method that the identity of Seoul's brand will be made.

If I have no child

If I have no child

In Korea, an ordinary married woman who have to care her child and to work in office need time to use for herself and for her husband. They should take care of their child every day. So they are tied down at home and in the office, even though their husband’s help. Most of woman have the more responsibilites than their husband. Woman’s life is all covered with their child. It would be luxurious and reasonable to imagine returning to the time before having a baby.

Without a child, in particular, woman’s daily routine would be very different. In my case, without the child, some raining morning, it would have the time to drink coffee without any interrupting. This would enjoy the romantic mood with my husband. Also, every morning, I would jog nearby my house to do well in my health. In special day, I would make a match of with my husband’s suit. All of this would gain to me the time for myself.

In my office, I would accept a special project without any anxiety when a boss asks me to carry it out. Because of lack of time, I often rejected the special project. Addition to, when I finish my work, I would do not worried about my home. And after work, I would have an appointment with my colleague or my friends freely.

Preparing dinner would have together. And I would talk about a lot of the interest. If I need the time to study in English or job concern’s study, I would study an institute until late. On special night, I would enjoy drink a wine with my husband under the candlelight at a romantic restaurant. And in a weekend, I would travel without any preparations. I would use the money to the trip on abroad with my husband instead of wasting the cost of child’s education.

On the whole, life would be romantic and luxurious like a movie because I would do not care of my child. Without a child, I would consider about my life and my husband life rather than child’s future, education, health, etc. It would be possible get well my life and my husband life.

Cancer

*definition
1 [C or U] a serious disease that is caused when cells in the body grow in a way that is uncontrolled and not normal, killing normal cells and often causing death:
2 [C] a harmful activity that spreads quickly:
Drug abuse is a cancer which is destroying our society.
3.noun [C or U]
the fourth sign of the zodiac, relating to the period from 22 June to 22 July and represented by a crab, or a person born during this period

What is cancer?
Cancer is a disease of cells. It is an abnormal growth of cells which tend to proliferate in an uncontrolled way and, in some cases, to metastasize (spread).

Cancer is also called malignancy. A cancerous growth or tumor is sometimes referred to as a malignant growth or tumor. A non-malignant growth or tumor is referred to as benign. Benign tumors are not cancer.

Cancer is not one disease. It is a group of more than 100 different and distinctive diseases. Cancer is NOT contagious.

Cancer can involve any tissue of the body and have many different forms in each body area. Most cancers are named for the type of cell or organ in which they start. If a cancer spreads (metastasizes), the new tumor bears the same name as the original (primary) tumor.

Cancer is the Latin word for crab. The ancients used the word to mean a malignancy, doubtless because of the crab-like tenacity a malignant tumor sometimes seems to show in grasping the tissues it invades. Cancer may also be called malignancy, a malignant tumor, or a neoplasm (literally, a new growth).

=Signs and symptoms
Roughly, cancer symptoms can be divided into three groups:
1)Local symptoms: unusual lumps or swelling (tumor), hemorrhage (bleeding), pain and/or ulceration. Compression of surrounding tissues may cause symptoms such as jaundice (yellowing the eyes and skin).
Symptoms of metastasis (spreading): enlarged lymph nodes, cough and hemoptysis, hepatomegaly (enlarged liver), bone pain, fracture of affected bones and neurological symptoms. Although advanced cancer may cause pain, it is often not the first symptom.
Systemic symptoms: weight loss, poor appetite, fatigue and cachexia (wasting), excessive sweating (night sweats), anemia and specific paraneoplastic phenomena, i.e. specific conditions that are due to an active cancer, such as thrombosis or hormonal changes.
Every symptom in the above list can be caused by a variety of conditions (a list of which is referred to as the differential diagnosis). Cancer may be a common or uncommon cause of each item.

Last weekend

Kenny's wedding ceremony

Last weekend, I had special experience. I attended to my English teacher, Kenny's wedding ceremony; Korea traditional wedding is attractive spectacle to me.

It was strange weather. In the morning, it was sunny day, But before the ceremony just start, it was raining. and then during the ceremony it was heavy raining. Marvelously, as soon as the ceremony it was clear sky. Oh, dear!
In my oppinion, as to be grown up well the plants in the spring, it is need sufficent water. Therefore, this ceremony was blessed and the bride and groom will be happy forever. Even though it was a heavy rain during the ceremony, all of people including the Kenny and his wife delighted all the time in wedding ceremony.
Koean traditional cecemony was complex in order and interesting.

Briefly put in order the ceremony.
The ceremony started the Korean traditional percussion quartet,"Samulnori" to celebrate and add to it.And then both of mother light a candle on the wedding table. Later on the order, Kenny entered riding in a sedan chair with hidden his face the back of the fan. After entrances of Kenny, beautiful bride entered hidden her hands back of traditional fabric.

First, the groom walked to the east side of the wedding table. Then the bride walked to the west end.
The bride and groom then faced each other across the wedding table. The helpers washed the hands of the bride and groom. The washing of their hands symbolized cleansing themselves for the ceremony.
With the aid of her helpers, the bride bowed twice to the groom. With the aid of his helpers, the groom bowed back once to the bride. The bride then bowed two more times to the groom, who bowed back once more. They finished by kneeling down and facing each other. The bowing represented the promise of commitment to each other.

Second, this part of the ceremony had two main variations, due to regional differences. The first variation had the couple drinking from the same cup, with their assistants passing it back and forth between bride and groom. The second variation had them drinking from separate halves of a gourd. The drinking signified the destiny of the new husband and wife, as well as their harmony together. Using two halves of the same gourd further symbolized that the bride and groom each made up one half and only together could they be considered whole.

Third, as soon as the congratulator shouted the well wishing remark;" Pray to make a living well and to have 12 babies", Kenny's friend let fly the chickens.
A male and female chicken (one wrapped in a blue cloth, the other in a red one) sit on or under the wedding table. One meaning is the symbolism associated between roosters and the morning. The crowing of the rooster marked the beginning of the day, a bright, fresh start, just like the marriage should be. The crowing of the rooster also told the evil spirits that day was coming and they had to disappear. The rooster in the wedding ceremony marks a hope that evil spirits will go away and not trouble the new couple.A secondary meaning represents the hopes that the couple will have many children, very important in a traditional agrarian society. As productive chickens made many eggs, thus should the new bride produce many children.

Finally, the groom and bride joined together and bowed three times: once to their parents, once to their ancestors, and once to the guests.
After bowed, the groom and bride had walking on the unfolded carpet in the middle of the ceremony. The same time, all of congratulator throw some rices and red-bean to pray for the groom and bride future(IT IS VERY INTERESTING).
